Privacy policy
Last updated March 1, 2025
Our Privacy Policy is fairly simple. We’ll try to be as brief as possible.
- You own your data, which includes anything you choose to publish to the world in your tribute. You can edit or un-publish it whenever you choose. We don’t sell or share your data with anyone else behind the scenes.
- No information about you will be stored that is not data you type into forms on the site, or photos or videos you upload. For instance, we do not track your actions under the hood, nor your browsing history, nor your IP address or any location data that could be associated with it. If you were to look in our database, you would not find any data about you that you did not enter yourself.
- While you are logged in, we store certain information about you that simply allows us to identify you as the authenticated user. When you log out, that information is deleted.
- There is a small amount of data you may need to enter that is not publicly viewable in your tribute — your email address, for instance. That is necessary for us to set up your account and commmunicate with you when you want to reset your password, or you want to be notified if someone leaves a comment on a tribute, for example. Besides these necessary functional communications, we rarely will email you with marketing emails, and we don’t sell or make available to anyone else your email address or any other non-published data without your consent.
- At any time, you can request that your account and all data associated with it be fully deleted. Give us a day or two, and we will make that happen.
OK, that’s the Elegy policy, but there are a couple caveats related to third-party services we use.
Third-party services used by Elegy
Following are companies we use to provide certain services to run Elegy’s website, and who may have access to some of your data.
- Payments: A company called Stripe processes all payments that happen on Elegy. We do not store or process any debit card or credit card data within Elegy’s infrastructure. When you enter your card information, that data is handled by Stripe, which acts as both the data processor and data controller for the payment. Because of this, data related to your payment card and the transaction itself is covered not by our privacy policies, but by Stripe’s policies.
- Bot blocking: To protect Elegy against automated spammy sign-ups and form submissions, we use a service called Friendly Captcha. When submitting a form, you may be asked to complete a simple challenge to verify you are a human. This interaction is managed by Friendly Captcha’s technology. We chose Friendly Captcha because it is privacy-focused and follows strict rules regarding user data. Friendly Captcha does not store your personal data or track your browsing activity, and it complies with the European GDPR. Learn more about Friendly Captcha’s privacy policy.
- Site analytics: To help us understand how people use our site and how it might be improved, we use a service called Fathom Analytics, a privacy-focused analytics tool that does not use cookies or track personally identifiable information. Fathom tallies anonymized data about how many people are visiting the public-facing pages of the Elegy website, how many views each page gets, etc — while following strict rules regarding user data. Fathom complies with the GDPR, ePrivacy (including the UK’s Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations), Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, and California Consumer Privacy Act. Learn more about Fathom’s data policies.
- Image and video processing: We use Amazon Web Services products to process and store images and videos. If you upload images or videos, AWS’s privacy policy may apply to those media files, but AWS receives no information about you or your account.
- Transactional email: We use Amazon Web Services products to send emails related to resetting your password, or alerting you that certain events have happened on your tribute — that someone left a comment, for instance. AWS’s privacy policy may apply to these emails.
This policy may be updated periodically.
That’s it. Let us know if you have questions.
